Day 8 - Goodnight Sweet TIFF

By HANNAH SUNG

I have four letters for you today and, no, they aren't T I F F; try T G I F.

Tomorrow may officially be the last day of the fest (there are a couple of screenings left) but really, this is where it ends. The cover of Toronto's main local tabloid ran a photo of a celeb flanked by paparazzi, but it was a Toronto hockey player, not a Hollywood deity. TIFF celeb-watch is officially over.

I went to my last film screening this afternoon in the beautiful Elgin theatre, 'The Walker,' starring Woody Harrelson. He really knows how to work the genteel, southern charm but overall there's little to make one care about the "who" of this whodunit. And, let's be frank, it is exceptionally difficult to stay awake for an ENTIRE film at this point. A mere 10 days ago, this diarist was pepped and ready to go. Post-TIFF, the only thing that will re-constitute body and spirit is a foot massage and some wine in a non-hypermegaclub setting.

Looking back on the experience, I have been to 19.5 films from 8 different countries plus 14 parties; I may have to stare at an empty meadow for several days to restore my mental balance. But I got to shake Roger Ebert's hand! I met Sir Michael Caine!

Several observations:

1. People are either dressing better than ever or they were wearing their Saturday-night best every day of the fest.

2. Canadian reporters are exceedingly polite and when crammed at a roundtable with foreign journalists it shows. It's either sweet or bumbling. I'm not sure.

3. Parties attached to films are the only ones worth going to. Invited to a party with a cover fee? Stay home!

4. If you get an invite to an "invite-only" party, don't expect to see any VIPs because they will be in a sectioned-off area within another sectioned-off area. It's like these parties are Russian dolls and your favourite actor is the little nubbly guy inside - there's no way you will get through all his "people."

5. If you want to "bump" into a celeb who is a mommy or daddy, visit any green space in Yorkville in the afternoon. They will be there - kids need outdoor time!

And that's it! I'm pooped. On the agenda for tomorrow? Uh...nothing. Hmm. Do I really have to wait a whole year for TIFF to come around again?
