Stargazing at TIFF

Where to spot the celebs during the Toronto International Film Festival

If you're from Toronto and worth your salt, you know that Yorkville (the area around Bay subway station) is the place in the city for spotting celebrities - especially during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The Four Seasons, Avenue Bar (where the Olsen twins were seen clinging to each other for dear life - and probably warmth, given their lack of body fat), the Yorkville Starbucks (Hilary Duff and Paris Hilton have both been spotted there) - these are all places you can catch a glimpse of fame. But what about the celebs who venture outside the chi chi district in search of a chill hangout spot? This year, it's said that Brad Pitt will be in town along with Jodie Foster, Woody Allen, Cate Blanchett, Jake Gyllenhaal and Kiera Knightley. We wanted to find the juiciest celeb-spotting places in Toronto, so we went to the expert. Debra Goldblatt, superstar PR diva (president and director of publicity and promotions) of rock-it promotions, has been dealing with celebrities for years. She dished the goods on finding the stars near you.

Yorkville, the Centre of the Universe

As aforementioned, Yorkville is the prime location for spotting celebrities. When in town, they're usually staying at a hotel here. As a warning, they usually stay in hard-to-access security-laden princess suites. If you've got the cojones, you could dress up as a maid or waiter to catch a peek. You could also try stopping by Over the Rainbow to check out the size zeros squeezing into stiff new Rock & Republics (John Mayer was there recently). Clubs Amber, Flow and Lobby are big on the TIFF circuit, as well. Goldblatt also says to keep an eye on C5 at the ROM for some Hollywood faces this year.

Step Aside, Four Seasons

The Drake and The Gladstone are both great places to spot the hip set, from what we can glean from TIFFs of the past. But newest on the block is the Cosmopolitan, which is sure to rustle up some celeb status this year. The extravagant boutique hotel and spa features natural gemstone fountains en suite, 32" LCD flat screen TVs and air purifiers to keep pampered prima donnas happy. Last but not least, The Windsor Arms (located in Yorkville) is also good fodder for celeb gossip. Fun fact: it hosted the very first TIFF in 1976.

McGosling About Town

Let's face it, as far as A-listers living in Toronto go, we don't have much to work with. But 'Notebook' stars and lovers Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling can be seen gallivanting around town on a fairly regular basis.

McAdams was spotted this August at The Press Club enjoying a few drinks with friends while Gosling was seen riding shotgun in a white Hummer tooling around the Annex. The lovebirds have also been caught bowling at the Bathurst Bowlerama. So strap on some bowling shoes and huge sunglasses and you've got yourself an evening in the life of a hot celeb!

Miscellaneous Star Magnets

The Spoke Club definitely boasts celebrity status, although if you want to gain entrance, you'd better be a member. Many A-listers (who we can't mention here, lest we be shot by the club owners) have hosted private events there. After-hours clubs like 751 on Queen West and the infamous Matador at College and Dovercourt both draw rebel celebs. Harrison Ford was seen drinking a non-alcoholic *cough* beverage at the Matador and 751 played host more than once to the likes of 'Sopranos' star Michael Imperioli. Goldblatt hints that Sweaty Betties might see a few famous faces this year, for those who want to venture past velvet ropes and playing dress-up.

Finally, Goldblatt offers this advice if you find yourself face to face with your favourite movie star: "If you want a photograph or an autograph, just approach them politely and keep within respectful person space boundaries. Be gracious and remember they are approached all the time." You don't want to be mistaken for a stalker, so just be your fab self and then get the heck out of their way - your star of choice is probably running late for her next big interview, premiere or facelift!
