Q: What's the difference between the AIM service for SMS phones and the AIM service on my computer?
A: On your phone, your phone book is your key to navigation. It contains both your Buddy ListŪ and the commands for using the service. To add or delete buddies or to see who is online, you'll send a message to a listing in your AIM service for SMS phones phone book.

While the AIM service on your computer accumulates all of the sent and received messages for each conversation in a single window, the AIM service for SMS phones uses a separate Short Message for each comment, allowing you to save or delete comments as you choose. The AIM service on your computer can handle virtually unlimited conversations, but the AIM service for SMS phones relies on your phone's Short Message Service capabilities, which often has a 20-message storage limit. Also note that most two-way SMS services limit each message to 160 characters.

Some additional differences:
  • The AIM service for SMS phones does not support the Chat function.
  • With the AIM service for SMS phones you can temporarily reject users attempting to send you an instant message, but you can't permanently block them as you can with AIM Express or the AIM service on your computer.

Q: How does the Buddy ListŪ feature work on my mobile phone?
A: A: Just like on your PC, the Buddy ListŪ feature on your mobile phone displays the name and status for all online and offline buddies. The first time you sign on to AIM service for SMS phones, there are no buddies listed unless you have created a group named "Mobile Device" using AOLŪ, AIM Express or the AIM service on your computer.

If you are using AOLŪ 4.0 or greater, AIM 4.7 or greater, or AIM Express, and if you have not already created a Mobile Device group using your PC before you sign on to AIM service on your mobile phone, a "Mobile Device" group is automatically created in your AIM Buddy ListŪ when you sign on to the AIM service for the first time. This list is limited to 30 buddies. If you add more than 30 to your Mobile Device group, only the 30 most recently-added will be retained.

To add new buddies to your list, send a message containing your buddy's screen name to the AIM-Buddies phone book entry. You will then receive a confirmation message instructing you to add the screen name and number to your phone book.

Your buddy's screen name is saved to the Mobile Device group and is shared with AIM Express and the AIM service on your computer.

Q: Are multiple Buddy Groups supported?
A: Only the Mobile Device group is supported by the AIM service for SMS phones.

Q: How do I view messages?
A: Messages arrive in your phone's Short Message Service inbox.

Q: How do I get notified when an instant message arrives?
A: Instant messages arrive much like other cellular Short Messages, with either a beep or a vibration, depending on the phone. Also most phones will indicate who the message is from. On those messages that don't, the first word in the message is the sender's identity.

Q: How do I get notified when a buddy goes online?
Send a message to AIM-Buddies and you will receive a series of messages dividing your buddies into three categories: online, away and offline.

Q: Can I change my AIM password using my SMS phone?
At this time you may not change your password using the AIM service for SMS phones.
