Q1: How do I have IMs forwarded to my cell phone?
A: To set up IM forwarding
  1. Go to AOL® Keyword: IM Forwarding.
  2. Review the Terms and Conditions, and then click the Enable IM Forwarding check box.
  3. Type your full ten-digit mobile phone number in the boxes provided, and then click Confirm. A four-digit confirmation number will be sent to your mobile phone. This confirmation number is to ensure that your phone supports text messaging.
  4. Retrieve the four-digit confirmation number from your mobile phone (turn on your mobile phone if it's not already turned on.)
  5. From the IM Forwarding page, type your four-digit confirmation number, and then click OK to complete the setup process. If the code is not delivered right away, click Confirm Later and an e-mail will be sent reminding you to confirm your forwarding request.
Notes
  • Your wireless service provider may charge you for this and other text messages you send or receive. Please consult your wireless service provider regarding their pricing plans.
  • Unless you are using a mobile phone capable of two-way text messaging from a carrier that allows 2way IM service, you will be unable to respond to any messages forwarded to your phone.
  • To edit your IM Forwarding setup at a future time, simply return to AOL® Keyword: IM Forwarding.

Q2: Is IM Forwarding different from AIM on a cell phone?
A: IM Forwarding is different from the AOL® Instant Messenger™ (AIM) Wireless service in a few ways:
  • With IM Forwarding, your instant messages are sent to your mobile phone when you are away from your computer. These IMs are sent as text messages. Depending on your phone and wireless service provider, you may or may not be able to reply to these messages. Also with IM Forwarding, you are not able to see your Buddy List®, set Buddy Alerts, block messages, or use any other AIM features from your phone.
  • The AIM Wireless service is like using the AIM service from your phone. In addition to sending and receiving instant messages, you can see and modify your Buddy List®, set alerts so your phone alerts you when buddies come on line, initiate conversations from your mobile phone and block messages.
  • With both IM Forwarding and the AIM Wireless service, your friends will be able to tell that their IMs will be sent to your phone. They will see a Mobile Device icon appear next to your screen name both in their Buddy List® window and in the conversation window.
Notes
  • Your wireless service provider may charge you for this and other text messages you send or receive. Please consult your wireless service provider regarding their pricing plans.

  1. Go to AOL® Keyword: IM Forwarding.
  2. Click Enable IM Forwarding to clear the check box.

Q4: Will I be able to reply to IMs that have been forwarded?
A: Your mobile phone must have two-way text messaging (or SMS) from a carrier that allows two-way IM service for you to be able to respond to forwarded messages. Contact your wireless service provider for more information on your phone's text messaging capabilities and your wireless service plan.
