Q1: What are the differences between the AIM service for Web phones and the AIM service on my desktop PC?
A: On your phone, the Conversations and Buddy ListŪ are the key to navigation. Instead of opening multiple conversation windows as you would on AIM on your computer, the AIM service for Web phones lists all conversations with your online and offline buddies, and their current status, on one page.

The Conversations List indicates when messages have been sent to you, either by buddies or by people not currently on your Buddy ListŪ. While AIM on your computer accumulates all sent and received messages for each conversation in a single window, the AIM service for Web phones displays the new and previous messages for each conversation in separate windows. During a conversation, the oldest messages can be removed to make room for new ones.

The AIM service on the desktop can handle virtually unlimited conversations. Depending on your wireless service, the AIM service for Web phones can handle only a limited number of simultaneous conversations. Some additional differences:
  • The AIM service for Web phones does not support the Chat function.
  • With the AIM service for Web phones, you can temporarily reject users attempting to send you an instant message, but you cannot permanently block them as you can with AIM Express or the AIM service on your computer.

Q2: Which phones are supported?
A: Any phone that has wireless Web service and a WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) microbrowser will support this service.

Q3: How does the Buddy ListŪ feature work on my mobile phone?
A: The Buddy ListŪ displays the name and status for all online and offline buddies. The first time you sign on to the AIM service from your Web phone, there are no buddies in your lists unless you have created a buddy group named "Mobile Device" using AOLŪ, AIM Express, AOLŪ Mobile Communicator, or the AIM service on your computer.

If you are using AOLŪ 4.0 or greater, AIM 5.0 or greater, or AIM Express, and have not created a group named "Mobile Device" using the AIM service on your computer, a "Mobile Device" group is automatically created when you sign on to the AIM service for Web phones for the first time.

This group serves as your complete Buddy ListŪ when using the AIM service on your mobile phone and is limited to 30 buddies. If you have 30 buddies or less, all are added. Otherwise, the 30 most recently-created buddies are added to the Mobile Device group.

To add new buddies to this list using your phone, select MENU and then select Add Name to Buddy ListŪ. These new buddy names are saved to the "Mobile Device" group in your Buddy ListŪ and are shared with AIM Express and the AIM service on your computer.

After you add a buddy to your list, the screen name will first appear under Offline Buddies. Select MENU and then select Get New/Update List to update your buddy's status. After your buddies have been added to the Buddy ListŪ, their status is updated whenever you sign on or update the lists. The symbols preceding a buddy name indicate the buddy's status.

Q4: What is the Conversations List?
A: This list displays all of your open conversations. The names in the list are sorted in order of most recent activity.

Q5: What do the different symbols next to Buddy ListŪ names mean?
A: Here are the meanings for the symbols you may find next to your Buddy ListŪ names:
  • * New Message. You have received a new message from this buddy.
  • ! Alert. You will be alerted when this buddy signs on.
  • = Away. This buddy is Away.
  • ? Uncertain. This buddy could be offline.
  • X Rejected. You have rejected this buddy.
Depending on your phone and carrier, a period ( . ) or underscore ( _ ) might precede screen names to improve the readability of the list.

Q6: Are Buddy Groups supported?
A: Buddy Groups are not supported by the AIM service for Web phones. Instead, it uses a single Buddy Group that appears as the Mobile Device group in the PC-based Buddy ListŪ used by AOLŪ, AIM, and AIM Express.

Q7: How do I view my messages?
A: All ongoing dialogs are maintained under the Conversations section of the Buddy ListŪ. When a name is selected under this section, select VIEW to display the conversation associated with that name.

Q8: How do I send an instant message to someone in my Buddy ListŪ?
A: From the main screen, scroll down to the name of the intended recipient and select the soft key labeled SEND. The resulting screen should allow you to either select one of our "canned" messages by selecting Quick Reply, or you can send your own personal message by selecting Reply. Enter your message then select the soft key labeled SEND

Q9: How do I send an instant message to an unlisted buddy?
A: From the main screen, select MENU. Then select Send Msg to . . .

Q10: What is the maximum message size supported by the AIM service on my mobile phone?
A: The absolute maximum size of a message depends on your phone and carrier. The average message size is less than 200 characters, and the AIM service for Web phones can typically handle messages twice that size. Each AIM conversation, including previous and latest messages, can display about 600 characters total.

Q11: How do I reply to an instant message?
A: From the main screen, scroll down to the name under the Conversations heading and select VIEW.

Q12: What is a Quick Reply?
A: Using Quick Reply, you can easily select from a collection of "emoticons," simple greetings, and common phrases used to coordinate activities with other people. Use the Quick Reply feature to quickly send messages with minimal typing. After you select a Quick Reply, you can add additional text to the message.

Q13: How do I update my Buddy ListŪ?
A: Select MENU, and then select Get New/Update List.

Q14: How do I get notified when an instant message arrives?
A: Each time an instant message is received, the AIM client generates an alert. Depending on the handset, browser version, and alert settings, the handset may generate an audio tone or vibrate, display an icon, and/or flash an LED. Your phone may also display "Message from AIM" and offer a function key to jump directly to the Buddy ListŪ.

Q15: How do I get notified when a buddy goes online?
A:The easiest way to see when a buddy has come online is to set an alert that will notify you when this happens. To do this:
  • Scroll down to the name of the name of the buddy who you want to set the alert for.
  • Select MENU.
  • From the next screen select Set Alert for buddyname.
  • Once this option has been closed and confirmed, there will be an exclamation mark (!) next to your buddy's screen name in the Buddy ListŪ.

Q16: How do I add a buddy?
A: Select MENU key, and then select Add name to Buddy ListŪ.

Q17: How do I remove a buddy?
A: Scroll down to the buddy name you want to delete and select MENU. Then, select Delete buddyname.

Q18: How do I reject messages from someone in my Buddy ListŪ?
A: Scroll down to the name of the user you want to reject. Select MENU, and then select Reject Msgs from buddyname. Messages from the user will be rejected until the current session ends. To accept messages from the rejected user, select MENU, and then select Accept Msgs from buddyname.

Q19: How do I accept or reject messages from an unlisted screen name?
A: When you first receive a message from someone who is not in your Buddy ListŪ, you are asked to accept or reject messages from that person. If you begin accepting messages from the person, you can still reject them later. To do this, highlight the screen name in the Conversations List and select MENU; then select Reject Msgs from buddyname.

Q20: How do I block someone in my Buddy ListŪ?
A: It's not possible to block a Buddy ListŪ member using the AIM service for Web phones. However, you can use the Block Buddy feature in the AIM or AIM Express service on your computer to block further messages from that buddy.

Q21: How do I change my online status?
A: To change your status, perform the following steps:
  • Select MENU.
  • Select AIM Options.
  • Select the first item on the AIM Options list, either Set Status to Away or Set Status to Available.
  • To change your status to Offline, you must sign off.

Q22: How do I change my AIM password?
A: Select MENU and then select AIM Options. Then, select Change Password. You can change the password associated with the screen name from your wireless device, even if the screen name is shared with an AOLŪ account or other AIM clients. Changing this password applies to all logins with the current screen name. If you change the password for your screen name using the AIM service, you will also need to separately update the password from the AIM client on your computer. To avoid problems signing in to AOLŪ and other versions of the AIM service, it is highly recommended that you do not change your password from your phone.
