What is AOL® Instant Messaging (AIM)?

Instant messaging is the easiest way to exchange messages with your friends, family, and colleagues. With IM, you can have a true, two-way conversation with other AOL® Instant Messenger™ (AIM) users in real time. Instant messaging enables you to contact your favourite "buddies" and access entire AIM community via text message. This community has over 180 million subscribers. (Traditional instant messaging required users to log on to the Web from a desktop computer.)

All the handsets that Fido currently offers support instant messaging. What's more, IM is available to all our customers, regardless of whether they choose prepaid service or a monthly package. So, anyone with a Fido handset can chat with anyone who is an AIM subscriber, including other Fido customers, any other North American wireless subscriber, and anyone using a Web-enabled desktop PC anywhere in the world!

What is an AIM screen name?
The AIM screen name is simply your instant messaging identity. This is the identifier by which you will be known to all your on-line contacts who use the service. If you do not already have an AIM screen name, please visit their respective Web site at http://www.aol.ca/aim/aim55/ to register for one (for free).

How do I get set up?
If you already have an AIM account, simply log on from your Fido handset and you're all set to go!

If you need to set up an AIM account, simply visit http://www.aol.ca/aim/aim55/ and follow the instructions. It only takes a minute or two and it's free!

How much does this service cost?
As a rule, instant messages are sent via Text Messaging, which Fido offers on a pay-per-use basis at 15˘ per message sent. Instant messages received are free.

If you plan to send instant messages from your Fido frequently, you may want to consider choosing one of our messages options.

Customers using a hiptop device, however, send instant messages over GPRS. IM usage over GPRS is considered a form of data transmission, meaning that it is billed separately from your text messages and at a different rate.

What is embedded instant messaging?
Embedded instant messaging simply means that your handset has a specific menu just for the AIM service, making it easier to reply to messages and see if your buddies are on-line at all times.

Embedded AIM is available on the following Fido handsets:
  • Danger hiptop
  • Motorola V400
  • Motorola V180
  • Nokia 3390E
  • Sony Ericsson T310

Non-embedded usage requires you to input additional 'string commands' and 'IM numbers' to route your instant messages. To learn more about non-embedded IM usage see our Instructions below.

Instructions for Non-Embedded AIM Handsets
Mobile instant messaging uses a technology that is new to the wireless world. For this reason, many handsets currently on the market are considered non-embedded and require the input of additional 'string commands' and 'IM numbers' to route messages.
