What is AOL Hometown?

AOL Hometown is the best place to find home pages made by people like you on AOL and the Internet. You don't need to know anything about Web publishing to get a free page in AOL Hometown. We've made it as easy as 1-2-3

In our communities, you'll find home pages about everything from how to start your own business to how to start a herb garden. AOL Hometown is all about community; it's a way to find people who share your interests, who are fascinated by the things that fascinate you. How is AOL Hometown organised?

When you first go into AOL Hometown, you'll be on the Main screen. At the top of the page, you'll see the AOL Hometown toolbar. It has four links: Create, Resources, Browse and Help . Those links together are called the AOL Hometown toolbar. No matter where you go in AOL Hometown, you can get to any of these main areas with a single click of your mouse.

The Create link takes you to a page that explains the two tools we have to create pages.

The Resources link takes you to an area that contains beginners guides, links and tips about building Web pages.

The Browse link takes you to a page which lists all the categories and communities in Hometown. You can browse through members' pages from here.

The Help link takes you here, to AOL Hometown's Help area.

Who can visit AOL Hometown?

Anyone (not just AOL members) browsing the Internet can visit and join AOL Hometown! Our doors are always open. This means that if you add your home page to an AOL Hometown community, anyone on the Internet can come to see your home page.

How do I become an AOL Hometown member?

It's easy. Simply click the Create link above any Hometown page to become a member. If you have a Screen Name and password for use with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, or other AOL Web Products, you can login. AOL members using the AOL software will be automatically logged in. After logging in, you'll be able to use AOL Hometown's publishing tools and join our communities.

Who can see my home pages in AOL Hometown?

Anyone (not just AOL members) with an Internet connection and access to the World Wide Web can visit AOL Hometown and see your home page listed in our communities. Your home page can also be visited directly from any Web browser.

Who can add home pages to AOL Hometown?

It's easy. Simply click the Create link above any Hometown page to become a member. If you have a screen name and password for use with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger,  or other AOL Web Products, you can log in. AOL members using the AOL software will be automatically logged in. After logging in or creating a name, you'll be able to use AOL Hometown's publishing tools and join our communities.

What are categories & communities?

AOL Hometown is organised by categories. These categories are made up of sub-categories or communities. For instance, a site dedicated to films would fall into the Entertainment & Games category.

What are the Community Guidelines?

AOL Hometown's Community Guidelines are the rules for what's appropriate for home pages found in AOL Hometown. Both AOL members and non-members can quickly report pages that are inappropriate or violate the Community Guidelines by clicking the Notify AOL link that appears on the toolbar of member home pages. Simply fill in the information requested to send a message to AOL's Conditions of Service team. They will take appropriate measures in accordance with the AOL Hometown Community Guidelines

Can I report objectionable pages that I might find?

Yes. AOL Hometown has developed its own rules of the road for what's appropriate for home pages found in AOL Hometown. Both AOL members and non-members can quickly report pages that are inappropriate or violate the Community Guidelines by clicking the Notify AOL link that appears on the toolbar Hometown pages. Why does my page have a toolbar?

A toolbar has been introduced to help Hometown members find their way around. From the toolbar you can create a new page, mail your page to a friend, find other pages in your community or in Hometown and access the help pages, all one click away. In addition, people visiting your page will be able to do the same. All these features will help your page get more visitors.

Can I remove the toolbar?

You cannot remove the toolbar from your page. However, AOL members can always access their FTP web space at Keyword: FTP. Here you will be able to upload your pages and there will not be banners. These pages will not be part of the Hometown community and therefore will not be listed.

Anyone with an AOL or AOL Instant Messenger Screen Name can create and add a home page to AOL Hometown. To create and add a page using AOL Hometown's publishing tools, simply click the Create Page link on the toolbar.

Why should I add my home page to AOL Hometown?

What do I do if my home page wasn't listed when I tried to add it to AOL Hometown?

If you've created a home page that you'd like to add to AOL Hometown, but the page isn't listed at Step 1 of the Add process, you'll need to make sure you've actually published or uploaded that page. Only pages that have been uploaded to your AOL Web space will be listed. If you created your home page using 1-2-3 Publish or Easy Designer, your page is automatically uploaded and published when you click Save. Saved pages are also automatically added to an AOL Hometown community. If your page doesn't appear in the list, be sure to click Save when using 1-2-3 Publish or Easy Designer.

Nothing. You can upload as many pages as you wish (up to the 12 Mb limit) to AOL Hometown for FREE!

Will my home page address change if I add it to AOL Hometown?

When you create a page with AOL Hometown you'll be shown the address of the page. Take note of this and share it with family and friends.

Yes. Please use the File Manager to do so. At the moment though, we place your Web site in a particular community for you.

You can only use each template once. However, you are free to create as many pages as you want, with lots of different templates, unless you use up your 12 Mb allowance.
