Signing On

Before you can sign on, you must have an AOL®, Compuserve 2000 or AIM screen name, a Web-enabled phone, and wireless Internet service provided through your wireless carrier. Signing in on AIM Mobile will have an effect on any other AIM session using the same screen name:

  • When using AIM Mobile and AOL®, you can sign in with the same screen name on both. Any messages will be received by your AOL® instant messaging session.
  • When using AIM Mobile and AIM or AIM Express, signing in on one device signs off any session on another device. For example, if you are using AIM on your PC, and then login with the same screen name on your phone, the AIM session on your PC will be signed off.

If you don't have a screen name, click here to register a new screen name. If you have a screen name, you're ready to begin.

Selecting the Web Browser
After turning on the phone, select MENU to display the Main Menu. Use the navigation keys to scroll through the Main Menu and select the Wireless Web, Minibrowser or Microbrowser

A message reminds you that "Airtime fees apply for browser use." Select OK to continue.

Selecting AOL® IM from the Menus
From the Wireless Web menu, select the AOL® or Messaging menus. From the Messaging menu, select AOL® IM.

The AOL Instant MessengerTM Screen
When you are connected to AIM, the AOL Instant MessengerTM screen is displayed:

  • Select OK to proceed.
  • Select ABOUT for Help.

Signing on to AIM
For typing screen names and passwords, the available text input modes commonly include the following:

  • Multi-tap (usually indicated as alpha/ALPHA or abc/ABC)
  • T9 Text Input (often indicated as T9, Quick, Word, etc.)
  • SYMBOLS (usually indicated as SYM)
  • NUMBERS (usually indicated as NUM)

Select the appropriate input mode before you start typing. It is typically easiest to type screen names and passwords using "multi-tap" mode. Most phones default to multi-tap, which is often indicated as "alpha" or "abc" mode for lowercase letters. Uppercase letters are usually indicated as "ALPHA" or "ABC."

To correct errors press the CLEAR or BACK key. Click here for more information on Typing.

TIP  On many phones with T9 Text Input, you can save your screen name and password in the user dictionary for quicker reentry. When typing a screen name using T9 Text Input, please note that some microbrowsers use RIGHT ARROW to add a space, and T9 Text input uses RIGHT ARROW to compound words. Therefore, AIM ignores spaces in screen names. When you are typing a screen name that is a compound word such as "SpaceCadet" or "iscreamdog" using T9 Text Input, just press the RIGHT ARROW to insert a space between words instead of compounding the word. AIM will ignore the spaces and interpret the screen name correctly.

Entering Your Screen Name
Type your screen name then select OK. After your screen name is accepted, the Password screen is displayed. The screen name is not case sensitive.

Entering Your Password
Type your password and select OK. Your Password is case sensitive, so use the appropriate  mode while typing, alpha for lowercase and  ALPHA for uppercase. The asterisks prevent anyone else from going "back" through your browser and seeing your password.

AIM Mobile does not save your name and password, but the Web browser may save the screen name and password until you turn off the phone.

Sign Off
Once you have signed on, your AIM Mobile session remains active - even if the browser is not being used or the phone is turned off - until you select Sign off or AIM automatically terminates your session after eight hours of inactivity. In this way, you can continue to receive messages while performing other activities with the phone.

When you are done sending and receiving messages using AIM Mobile, it is best to sign off so your buddies know you are offline. If you do not sign off, your status continues to appear as online on your friends' Buddy List.

To sign off, select MENU from the Conversations and Buddy ListTM page and then select Sign off. Sign Off is only available from the List Menu.

When you sign off, all current conversations are ended. Any buddies or unlisted names that have been rejected during the session will be able to send messages to you when you sign in again.

Also turn off your phone to prevent others from using your screen name. Even if you have signed off AIM Mobile, your screen name and password remain active on the phone and can provide access to your AIM session if anyone else uses your phone. If other people have access to your phone, you may want to put a password on your phone to prevent them from accessing your account.

TIP  To return to the Wireless Web menu from AIM Mobile, press and hold the MENU key to display the Browser Menu, then select Home to return to the Wireless Web menu. In this way you can easily switch between messaging and performing other activities with your Web Browser. To return to your AIM Mobile session, select AOL® IM from the AOL® or Messaging menus.
