Quickstart

Signing On
To begin, you need an AOL®, Compuserve 2000 or AIM screen name, a Web-enabled phone, and wireless Internet service provided through your wireless carrier. If you don't have a screen name, click here to register a new screen name. If you have a screen name, you're ready to begin. Just follow these steps:

  1. After turning on the phone, select MENU to display your phone's Main Menu. Use your phone's navigation keys to scroll through the menu.
  2. Depending on your  phone, select the Wireless Web, Microbrowser or Minibrowser option from the Main Menu.
  3. A message is displayed to remind you that airtime fees apply for browser use. Select OK to continue.
  4. Select AOL® or Messaging from the Wireless Web menu.
  5. Select AOL® IM  from the AOL® or Messaging menus.
  6. When you connect to AIM, the AOL Instant MessengerTM Screen is displayed. Select OK to proceed.
  7. Select the appropriate text input mode using a soft key. It is usually easiest to type screen names and passwords using multi-tap mode (ALPHA or ABC), and most phones default to multi-tap mode. If not, change to the desired mode. On many phones with T9 Text Input, you can save screen names and passwords for easier re-entry.
  8. Type your screen name then select OK
  9. Type your password and select OK.

After signing on, you will be able to add buddies to your Buddy ListTM, see who's online, and start Conversations. Click here to learn more about Signing On.

When you are done using AIM Mobile, sign off and turn off your phone to prevent others from using your screen name. Even if you have signed off AIM Mobile, the Web browser saves your screen name and password until the phone is turned off.

Navigating
How you interact with AIM Mobile is dependent on the specific model of phone and Web Browser provided with the phone.

  • Once you have signed on, AIM Mobile displays links and options as text on the browser. Some options may be numbered and can be selected by pressing a number key. Some lists of options require you to scroll through the list using the UP and DOWN arrows to highlight a link or option and then select OK
  • Many Web phones have two soft keys (for example, OK and MENU) designated for selecting options from the Web Browser. There are usually two options at the bottom of the display that can be selected by using these soft keys. Pressing a soft key performs the action of the label above it in the display. On phones without two soft keys, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrows to toggle between the selections and then press the OK key to make a selection.
  • Press the CLEAR or BACK key to return to the previous page or activity.
  • To use the Web browser for other functions during an AIM Mobile session, use the Browser Menu. On phones with MENU keys, press and hold MENU to display the Browser Menu. Depending on your phone, this menu will provide links to  Help with AIM, the Home page (Wireless Web menu), Bookmark the previous page, Show the URL for the previous page, Restart the browser, etc. When you return to AIM, you will be returned to the page from which you exited. This way you can easily switch between messaging and performing other Web activities with your phone.
  • To make calls and perform other activities with your phone while using AIM Mobile, press the END key to return to the standby screen. You will continue to receive messages and be alerted when messages arrive. In this way, you can receive messages without incurring Web charges while on standby, talking or doing other activities with your phone.
  • To end your AIM Mobile session, go to the AIM List Menu and Sign Off.

Using the Conversations List
After you sign on to AIM, the Conversations and Buddy ListTM are displayed. When you first sign on, there are no conversations. When you send or receive a message, the buddy's screen name will appear in the Conversations List. An "*" asterisk indicates when you have received a new message. Highlight the conversation and select VIEW to read the message and reply.

Using the Buddy ListTM
The Buddy ListTM displays the name and status for all online and offline buddies. The first time you sign on to AIM Mobile, there are no buddies in your Buddy ListTM unless you previously created a "Mobile Device" group using AOL® 4.0 or greater, AIM 4.2 or greater, or Aim Express.

If you have not already created one before you sign on to AIM Mobile, a "Mobile Device" group is created when you sign on to AIM Mobile for the first time.

To add new buddies to this list using your phone, select MENU and then select Add Name to Buddy ListTM. After you add a buddy to your list, the screen name will first appear under Offline Buddies.

Select MENU and then select Get New/Update List to update your buddy's status. The symbols preceding a buddy name indicate the buddy's status:

      * New Message. You have received a new message from this buddy.
! Alert. You will be alerted when this buddy goes online.
= Away. This buddy is Away.
? Uncertain. This buddy could be offline.
X Rejected. You have rejected this buddy.

Click here for more information on the "Mobile Device" group and the Buddy List feature.

Using the List Menu
use the List Menu to perform the following tasks:

When you have highlighted a conversation, you also can use the List Menu to reject messages and end conversations.

When you have highlighted an online buddy, you also can use the List Menu to delete the buddy and reject messages from that buddy.

You also can access the AOL® Portal on the Wireless Web from this list. To perform a task, highlight the task and select OK. For additional Help using AIM, select INFO.

Get New Messages and Update the Lists
Select Get New/Update List to retrieve new messages and update the status of your Conversations and Buddy ListTM.

Send a New Message
To send a new message, select Send Msg to . . . , enter a screen name. Select REPLY to type a message. To use a Quick Reply, press the DOWN arrow to highlight [Quick Reply] and then select QUICK. After you have composed a message, select SEND.

To cancel a message before you send it, press the CLEAR or BACK key. To end the conversation and delete all previous messages, select MENU and then select End Conversation. To know when you receive a reply to your message, use the Alerts.

Add a Name to the Buddy ListTM
To add a buddy, select Add Name to Buddy ListTM. Type the screen name of your buddy and select OK. After you add a buddy to your Buddy ListTM, your buddy will appear under the Offline Buddies listTM. Select MENU and then select Get New/Update List to determine their current status.

AIM Options: Changing Your Status or Password
There are two AIM options:

  • Set My Status to Away
  • Change Password

Select Set My Status to Away to stay online but indicate to your buddies that you are not available to receive messages. When you set your status to Away, the Buddy and Message Alerts are turned off and your buddies will see an Away icon next to your name on their Buddy ListTM. They will also receive an auto-reply message. You will still receive all messages and can view them while your status is Away.

To reset your status, use the AIM options to select Set My Status to Available. A page displays the number of new messages you received while you were away.

To change passwords, select Change Password. Click here for more information on Changing Passwords.

NOTE It is recommended that you do not change passwords from your phone.

Sign Off
Once you have signed on, your AIM Mobile session remains active - even if the browser is not being used or the phone is turned off - until you select Sign off, or AIM automatically signs you off after eight hours of inactivity. This way, you can receive messages without incurring Web charges while on standby, talking or doing other activities with the phone.

When you are done sending and receiving messages, it is best to sign off the service so your buddies know you are offline. If you do not sign off, you remain signed on until you are timed out, and your status will appear as online on your friends' Buddy ListTM.

After you sign off, also turn off your phone to prevent others from using your screen name. Even if you have signed off AIM Mobile, your screen name and password remain active on the phone and can provide access to your AIM session if anyone else uses your phone.

Typing Messages
Select the appropriate input mode before you start typing:

  • Multi-tap (usually indicated as alpha/ ALPHA and abc/ABC)
  • T9 Text Input (often indicated as T9, Quick, Word, etc.)
  • SYMBOLS (often indicated as SYM)
  • NUMBERS (often indicated as NUM)

It is typically easiest to type screen names and passwords using "multi-tap" mode, which is usually indicated as "alpha" or "abc" mode for lowercase letters. Uppercase letters are usually indicated as "ALPHA" or "ABC." Most phones default to the multi-tap mode. For typing text messages, T9 is twice as fast as multi-tap mode. On many phones with T9 Text Input, you also can save your screen name and password in the user dictionary for quicker re-entry. Click here to learn more about Typing Messages.
