Sending Instant Messages Using AIM
If you have used your phone's text messaging function, you know how to send and receive messages. The basic process is as follows:

  1. Address a new text message to a recipient
  2. Type your message using the phone's keypad
  3. Send the message
  4. Check your phone's Inbox for new messages
The AIM service works the same way. You converse with other AIM users by sending and receiving text messages. However, instead of a phone number, you send the text message to a unique Instant Message (IM) number assigned to each of the AIM screen names in your Buddy List. IM numbers are like phone numbers and are determined by your wireless carrier. Messages from AIM screen names appear in your text messaging Inbox as coming from the IM number. For many phones, if you have saved the AIM user's screen name and IM number in you phone book, you will see the message as coming from the screen name instead.
